Over the last 6 weeks our Wednesday Night
Bible Study has been looking at the book of Philippians. One of the big themes
in this book is that of rejoicing; rejoicing in the good times and rejoicing in
the bad times. We must remember that when Paul wrote this he was languishing in
a Roman gaol, having been on a long and harsh journey to get there. He was
writing to people who were under persecution by the Roman authorities and who
had given up much to become Christians. Still, in spite of the pain, suffering
and abuse he encourages them to rejoice in all things. He shares with them how
he has managed to find contentment in whatever life throws at him. What is the
basis of his contentment and rejoicing? his knowledge of and relationship with
the Lord Jesus Christ, the same Lord Jesus Christ who has saved us and leads us
on our own Christian journey.
When we know that our life journey is under the
control of our Lord Jesus then we can find peace and meaning in all that
happens. With that in mind we can find peace rather than produce anger when
things don’t go our way. Is there any better way to live? In love, Alan
